A la suite de ses \u00e9tudes, il devient b\u00e9n\u00e9dictin O.S.B. sous le nom de Fr\u00e8re Jean R\u00e9gis \u00e0 l\u2019abbaye d\u2019En-Calcat \u00e0 Dourgnes puis en exit \u00e0 l\u2019abbaye Sant P\u00e8re de Besal\u00fa en Catalogne. La guerre le rattrape en tant que sergent sous-officier au 102\u00e8me puis 345\u00e8me R\u00e9giment d\u2019Infanterie. Il mourra en captivit\u00e9 \u00e0 Mersburg, apr\u00e8s avoir \u00e9t\u00e9 fait prisonnier en tentant de secourir l\u2019un de ses hommes bless\u00e9 sur le champ de bataille.
